WHAT IS THE MEANING BEHIND THIS PROJECT?
"Piece of a Whole" concept allows a person in Arkansas to own a piece of the same painting as someone in Michigan, Texas, or even Dubai. Piecing out a painting goes beyond the isolation of "possession" by one person, creating a sense of universal connection while emphasizing that is the fragments of human experiences such as friendships, time, life lessons and chance encounters that contribute to who we are.
This concept also promotes access to the arts and makes collecting art an affordable option for many people.
WHAT DOES THE MAPLE LEAF MEAN TO THE ARTIST?
From Jodi:
The first painting I "cut up" debuted at the Tate Modern in the summer of 2009. That piece was created for a collaborative project titled µ. I worked with scholars/artist Mathew Steven Carlos and Henry Warwick among others. My contribution was to paint an image about my idea of "enlightenment." I divided the painting into 144 pieces and Matthew distributed these to audience members during the symposium inside of a DVD sleeve with that also contained a short film, original music, and a certificate of enlightenment. Audience members were asked to post their new painting fragment online HERE.
Matthew Steven Carlos described the cutting and distribution of the piece as:
"... enlightenment for any individual being is dependent upon other beings acting out of their own enlightenment."
In other words, our own actions contribute to outcomes larger than ourselves.
For the µ project, I painted a maple leaf to represent my idea of enlightenment that depicts my desire to "be the leaf" and float with the river - rather than to swim against the tide and/or try to control every component of my life. I've learned that focusing so intently on end goals hides alternatives and takes me away from "the moment." This mindset is encouraged by Ryokan's very complicated yet simplistic poem:
Maple leaf falling
Showing front
Showing back
For the paintings offered here, I decided to continue with both the maple leaf reflection,
and the "piece of a whole" concept since I still felt compelled to connect and collaborate and I'm still struggling with letting go of my idea of my world - knowing there is something much larger to understand and that I can learn from these connections on some level. I enjoy the photos and emails people send to me and the Facebook page becomes real-time performance.
