jodi patterson ARTIST STATEMENT
I am an interdisciplinary process painter. Sometimes this means I work alone to try to enhance my existence with a calm ritual of paint, canvas and Joni Mitchell on the radio. Other times it means I teach and share and empower people to risk and grow. More directly, it refers to the opportunities I create that invite people to participate in the process of making art with me. In the past, I've asked people to remove layers of masking materials with a sharp knife to reveal a finished painting; send me their artwork to allow me to “add to” their cherished (or not so cherished) works; draw with Sharpies on my canvases; purchase “parts” of a painting rather than entire paintings; trust me to “babysit” their artworks; or, most recently, to take digital images of gifted sections of paintings that can only be seen as a "whole" if the recipients participate accordingly.
My larger paintings take months of engagement to produce. I generally focus on one theme a year – from May 2nd to May 2nd (my birthday) and use painting as a tangible bridge to the power of the invisible realm. My aesthetic seems aware of the limited expanse of Earth compared to the vastness of the invisible: ideas, sounds, energy, space, time, insight, etc. These multi-layers of reality are too vast to “capture” or seclude onto a simple plane – yet they permeate all form. Therefore I layer multiple images to provide a more holistic depiction of experience. This collage aesthetic allows for many stories to unfold at once and exalts my desire to transform (rather than preserve) moments.
The past several years, ancient palm leaf manuscripts of Southeast Asia have influenced the horizontal format, symbolic imagery, and narrative qualities of my art.
